Toronto, December 4, 2006 – Little Geeks, a not-for-profit computer donation initiative, today announced that it is fully operational and ready to collect, refurbish and distribute used computers to underprivileged children in the Greater Toronto Area. A donation program like no other, Little Geeks allows donors (or “Donor Geeks”) to directly impact their own community, by providing free computing technology and educational tools to children in their own neighborhoods.

The brainchild of Andy Walker, a prominent technology journalist, Little Geeks has set the ambitious goal of placing 500 computers in the hands of underprivileged Toronto children by mid-February, 2007. Upon the successful completion of the Toronto pilot project, Little Geeks has plans to expand the program across Canada and into the United States.

"Computers have changed my life and the lives of millions of people around the world,” said Andy Walker, founder of Little Geeks. “Computers can open doors and educate. They are an enabler and an equalizer. Computers can bring the world to your living room and your ideas and thoughts to the world. Everyone should have the opportunity to be a part of the technology revolution.”

The donation program operates through the collaboration of three groups of dedicated volunteers, including ‘Donor Geeks,’ ‘Repair Geeks’ and ‘Mentor Geeks.’ Donor Geeks, after giving their used computer to the organization, have the opportunity to either adopt a ‘Little Geek’ or have littlegeeks.org select a recipient automatically. Once the unit is onsite, Repair Geeks take over and prepare the Donor Geek's computer for the Little Geek. With the donated system upgraded, Mentor Geeks step in and personally deliver the refurbished computer to the Little Geek’s home and help to install Internet connections and troubleshoot.

“Old computers need a home,” said Lisa Shishis, president and project director of Little Geeks. “With millions of computing systems becoming obsolete every year in this country, Little Geeks provides us with the opportunity to give the gift of technology to those in need today, while helping protect and preserve our environment for the future.” Alongside Andy and Lisa, GCI Group is providing their resources and expertise to help jumpstart the success of the initiative. As the program expands, Little Geeks will continue to welcome ‘Corporate Geeks’ who understand the value and importance of technology in the lives of Canadian youth.
